Project Archive and Gallery

Our volunteers undertake a wide variety of fun and creative ways of engaging and teaching our children. Here are just some examples of recent initiatives.

Hip-Hop Dance

This project was initiated by Dunja, a German volunteer who gave three months of her time and energy to SBT. Three times a week she went to the Arman shelter home to teach a group of children hip-hop. The workshop was a huge hit with the kids, and not only did this teach them a new style of dance and self-expression, they also got to perform a choreographed dance at SBT’s annual Christmas show!

Cultural Teaching

Two Singaporean volunteers, studying on exchange in New Delhi, took time out of their schedule to teach the children at the Saket contact point all about world culture (particularly Singaporean!!!). They have come up with a number of creative ways to do this, including puzzles, songs and dances, food, costumes and videos. This helps to enlarge the children’s’ world-view, and no doubt our volunteers have learned a thing or two as well!

Pottery

A Swiss intern at SBT conducted a pottery workshop with our young boys from Aasra shelter home. A local neighbourhood potter was brought in to teach the boys how to make clay candles from hand-spun pottery wheels. This workshop allowed the children to work with a kind of art that they would not have had the chance to work with up until then. Most importantly, the candles were ready just in time for Diwali!

City Walk Training

One volunteer recently decided to start working with our City Walk guides to help them develop marketing strategies for the programme and to expand their tour in new and exciting ways. Another volunteer from the U.S. is also helping to train one of the new guides by giving English lessons. Volunteers like these can help us improve on one of our most successful programmes for raising awareness.

Multimedia

Using the new computer lab in Apna Ghar shelter home Steffi, a German volunteer, conducted multimedia courses with alternating groups of boys. In this workshop Steffi taught the boys how to use social networks and set up blogs, as well as teaching them more basic computational and web-based skills.

Salaam Bombay movie

This movie, directed by Mira Nair, inspired the formation of Salaam Baalak Trust. The movie used a real street child as the lead actor and gives an honest, realistic portrayal of street life. The movie is divided into 10 minute clips on YouTube. Here is the link to the first section: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DTt-uXi3Xg

City Walk

SBT’s City Walk programme is something that every volunteer participates in before they begin their work. This initiative, started by a former volunteer from Britain, simultaneously raises awareness about street children and gives former children of the trust an opportunity to better their English and communication skills by conducting tours through the Paharganj area, explaining life on the street.
